Elephants move all four legs to swim and are able to move quite fast like that. Elephants mostly swim with their face above and their mouth below the water surface. Their big body provides enough floatation while the trunk acts like a snorkel. These strong animals can swim long distances without a problem and experts believe that elephants once swam from Southern India to Sri Lanka where they settled.

Elephant - Ears extended in aggressive posture
© Jeremy Williamson
            Ref:  00088_Elephant
Bringing their ears forward and extending them out from the head and spraying water or dirt can all be signs of aggression. The extended ears increase the profile and help to create a threatening presence. The ears, with blood vessels running close to the surface, act like a radiator and help the elephant maintain a cool, comfortable body temperature. Slowly flapping ears usually indicate that the animal is trying to cool down.
